Tom Alsop holds a Masters degree in Spanish Literature from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN and a BA  from Marian University in Indianapolis. Tom has traveled extensively in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica and Spain. Tom also has studied at La Pontificia Universidad Javeriana (La Javeriana) in Bogotá,  Colombia. Tom retired from Ben Davis High School in Indianapolis after a long and rewarding career teaching  middle school and high school Spanish. Since then, Tom has served on the adjunct faculty of Spanish at Butler  University.

 
He previously served as President of the Indiana AATSP, the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association and  the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica of AATSP. Tom also has served on the Board of Directors for Central States.  Tom served for 19 years on the AATSP Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica Executive Council. 


Tom, while teaching at Ben Davis HS, received the ACTFL Nelson Brooks Award for Excellence in the Teaching  of Culture, Ben Davis HS Teacher of the Year, Wayne Township Teacher of the Year and Indiana Finalist for Teacher of the Year. He also was awarded a Rockefeller Fellowship, a Lilly Teacher Creativity Fellowship and a Golden Apple Award for Technology Use in Teaching. Tom recently was installed into the Indiana AATSP / IFLTA Salón de la Enseñanza y Servicio for his service and contributions to the teaching of  Spanish. In 2020 Tom was awarded the Founders Award from Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages for his leadership and promotion of world languages.  


In Tom’s writing career he has created numerous culture, vocabulary and grammar activity books, readers, work books, videos and poster sets for Teacher’s Discovery, Carlex, Gessler Company, J. Weston Walch, NETC and Mc-Graw Hill companies. He presently writes, does Zoom Meetups, on-site workshops and directs the World  Stride Spanish Teacher Summer Immersion Programs in Havana, Guadalajara and Madrid. He is a frequent exhibitor and presenter at state, regional and national world language conferences. 


Tom’s also helps promo Guero Loco, a former student of Tom’s. Guero promotes the learning of Dual languages  using Rap/Hip hop music!
